Retirees had the WVU Planetarium all to themselves to view the full-dome film that takes viewers on a journey through space and time from the history of astronomy to modern scientific discoveries. Only recently have we truly begun to grasp our place in the vast cosmos. To learn about this journey of celestial discovery, from the theories of the ancient Greek astronomers to today’s grandest telescopes, retirees were invited to experience From Earth to the Universe.

The December book was The Cruelest Miles: The Heroic Story of Dogs and Men in a Race Against an Epidemic by Gay Salisbury and Laney Salisbury.  When a deadly diphtheria epidemic swept through Nome, Alaska, in 1925, the local doctor knew that without a fresh batch of antitoxin, his patients would die. The lifesaving serum was a thousand miles away, the port was icebound, and planes couldn't fly in blizzard conditions―only the dogs could make it. The heroic dash of dog teams inspired the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and immortalized Balto, the lead dog . This is the greatest dog story, never fully told until now. (Amazon blurb)
