Mason Dixon Field Trip

Retirees gathered at the Dunkard Pavilion at the Mason Dixon Historical Park for lunch and a presentation on the creation of the Mason Dixon survey line. We gathered to eat and visit at noon. After lunch, Kaden Statler, instructor of surveying and geometrics engineering at Fairmont State University, presented a talk on and demonstration of the history of the creation of the Mason-Dixon line.

The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History by Elizabeth Kolbert. This book is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize. A major book about the future of the world and the mass extinction unfolding before our eyes. Scientists around the world are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most devastating extinction event since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs. New Tygart Flyer and Forest Festival
Thursday, October 2, 2025All aboard the New Tygart Flyer! Retirees traveled to Elkins WV to board the New Tygart Flyer
for a four-hour ride on the diesel train along the Shavers Fork of the Cheat River to the High Falls of Cheat. This wilderness excursion included a cold-cut lunch on our way to the Falls. Afterwards, retirees had time to enjoy the Mountain State Forest Festival, one of the oldest and largest festivals in West Virginia. The streets of Elkins were filled with forestry & wood exhibits, a juried art show, a photography exhibit, a quilt show, and lots of arts and crafts.
