The May book was The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House by Kate Andersen Brower. The book summary says: America’s First Families are unknowable in many ways. No one has insight into their true character like the people who serve their meals and make their beds every day. Full of stories and details by turns dramatic, humorous, and heartwarming, The Residence reveals daily life in the White House.

WVURA Book Club

The April book was The Lost Family: How DNA Testing Is Upending Who We Are by Libby Copeland. The book summary says: You swab your cheek or spit into a vial, then send it away to a lab somewhere. Weeks later you get a report that might tell you where your ancestors came from or if you carry certain genetic risks. Or the report could reveal a long-buried family secret and upend your entire sense of identity.

WVURA Book Club


The March book was The Codebreaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing, and the Future of the Human Race  by Walter Isaacson. The book is an account of how Nobel Prize winner Jennifer Doudna and her colleagues launched a revolution that will allow us to cure diseases, fend off viruses, and have healthier babies.

WVURA Book Club


For the December meeting, members discussed the book The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz, by Erik Larsen. In this book, Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people “the art of being fearless.”


Book - Death in Mud LickFriday, November 5, 2021
WVURA Book Club


At the November meeting, members discussed the book Death in Mud Lick: A Coal Country Fight against the Drug Companies That Delivered the Opioid Epidemic by Eric Eyre. The New York Times called this a book about how painkiller pushers took over coal country.  People drove hundreds of miles to get to the Sav-Rite in Kermit WV.  Lines were so long that the pharmacy’s owner sold popcorn and hot dogs to people in the drive-through lane.

WVURA Book Club


For the October meeting, members discussed the book Extra Life: A Short History of Living Longer by Steven Johnson.  We have doubled our life expectancy in just one hundred years. This book is Steven Johnson’s attempt to understand where that progress came from. What are the forces that keep us alive longer?

The club discussed the book that the university selected for the Campus Read this fall: The Line Becomes a River: Dispatches from the Border by Francisco Cantu. "A must-read for anyone who thinks 'build a wall' is the answer to anything." -- Esquire.
